Debate: Should there be a code of conduct for retired judges?

live3Never before has the Centre sought to appoint a former Chief Justice of India as a Governor. In the wake of the Modi government’s veto of Gopal Subramanium as a Supreme Court judge and the hasty enactment of the National Judicial Commission, its decision to appoint former CJI P. Sathasivam as Governor of Kerala has given rise to fears about whether the BJP is trying to influence the judiciary.

I took part in a Rajya Sabha TV debate on the question of whether there should be a code of conduct for retired judges. The anchor was Girish Nikam and the other participants were Justice R S Sodhi (Retired Judge, Delhi High Court); Lt. Gen.(Retd.) K M Seth (Former Governor of Chhattisgarh and Tripura); H K Dua (MP, Rajya Sabha); K N Bhat (Former Addl. Solicitor General of India and a Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court). The half-hour show can be seen here.
